Q. Can I get insurance coverage as Captain of my vessel after completing this course?

Q. Do I have to take a US Powerboatingcourse to get insurance coverage as a Captain?

No, for owners who desire only to qualify for insurance coverage as Captain we offer a non-certification BASIC POWERBOATING COURSE.

Q. Will I be able to charter a vessel as Captain if we go abroad?

Yes, the US Powerboating BASIC CRUISING&COASTAL CRUISING COURSES, when combined, are recognized by bareboat charter companies like The Mooringsas qualification to charter their powerboats as Captain in the US, Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and Southeast Asia. See our BASIC CAPTAIN PACKAGE

Q. Can I get my California Boater’s License?

Yes, we are approved by NASBLA and the California Department of Boating and Waterways to administer the CA Boaters Card exam as part of the BASIC CAPTAIN & CRUISING CAPTAIN PACKAGES.

Q. How much experience do I need to take the Basic Powerboat course?

For the BASIC CRUISING COURSE we recommend basic knowledge and skills handling a powerboat and more importantly a desire to learn. That’s it!!

Q. Where do we go on the Coastal Cruising course?

Generally speaking and weather permitting, on each of the courses two days we will cruise along the coast to a local harbor like Los Alamitos Bay, Huntington Harbor or Long Beach. 

Q. What is the benefit of adding the Night Operations Endorsement to the Coastal Cruising course?

The benefit is the opportunity to immerse yourself on a real-world, multi-day passage to an offshore destination.

 

The BASIC CAPTAIN & CRUISING CAPTAIN PACKAGES are our two most exciting course offerings.After completing your 20 hours of BASIC CAPTAIN training we will embark on a 2-day / 1-night cruise whereinyou will learn how to plan, provision and navigate your way to Catalina Island. During the passage to the island we will simulate a person overboard emergency recovery situation. Upon arrival you will learn how to navigate AvalonHarbor, pickup a mooring and deploy your tender.  After dinneryou’ll secure your vessel and spend the night onboard.  The next day you’ll learn how to drop the mooring, exit the harbor and navigate up the islandto identifya suitable spot to anchor. You will learn how to deploy and set your anchor. While at anchor we will plot your nighttime navigation plan back to the mainland. In late afternoon you’llretrieve your anchor and depart for home while enjoying an offshoresunset.  As darkness falls you will learn how to safely navigate at night using radar, plotter and coastal aids to navigation, identify vessel traffic and navigate re-entry into the harbor.The order of events may vary with wind and weather conditions but we guarantee that completion of this course will leave you and your family with a well-deserved sense of competence and confidence. 

Q. Do you offer discounts?

Yes, we offer discounts if courses are purchased together as a package We also offer free crew training for a family member.

Q. Will I receive a certificate of completion?

Yes, after the successful completion of a US Powerboating or Sailing course and passing a written exam with a minimum score of 80% you are issued a US Powerboating/Sailing Logbook.  In addition, you will be issued a course completion sticker to place into your Logbook signed by your instructor.  Keep this is a safe place as this is your credential to present to bareboat operators or insurance providers.  In addition, your instructor will write a letter of competency addressed to your insurance provider verifying your skills and abilities as a Captain.
